      Open galleries. Open minds. Open late. Launch your weekend at the museum with music, art activities, talks, food and more on Friday nights. Tonight: Learn how to mend garments or knit in the Urban Homestead sewing circle. Hear about paintings in the Art of the North Galleries. Check out Alaska Design Forum’s Pecha Kucha Night. Listen to true tales by StoryWorks Alaska storytellers. Enjoy hammered dulcimer and guitar music in the elevator by the Kerr Family Band. Free admission thanks to ConocoPhillips.

      A night of Urban Homesteading
      6 to 9 p.m., atrium and various museum locations
      Come out of the cold and get cozy in the museum. Taking place at different times throughout the evening: listen to tales by Story Works Alaska storytellers, learn about teas from UAA’s Confucius Institute, sample coffee from Aquila Coffee, learn about testing your urban homestead for radon from the Cooperative Extension Service, bring a garment to repair in the mending circle led by artists Amy Meissner and Keren Lowell, or work on a knitting project. Free.

      Close-Up: Painting in the Cold
      6 to 6:30 p.m., Art of the North Galleries
      Delve into paintings by explorer and artist George Browne. Up-close viewing of artworks and collection objects with facilitated discussion. Space is limited; registration recommended.

      Alaska Design Forum: Pecha Kucha Night
      6:30 to 8 p.m., Chugach Gallery
      Pecha Kucha is a Japanese word for chit-chat. ADF’s Pecha Kucha Night is lively, rapid-fire presentation format that celebrates a wide variety of local creative work. Architects, artists, industrial designers, photograqphers and creatives present and discuss 20 images, with each image shown for just 20 seconds. In contrast to a design lecture, Pecha Kucha is a way for the local community to come together around design.

      Battle of the Breweries
      6 to 9 p.m., Muse
      Featuring Alaskan Winter, Sam Adams Winter and Samuel Smith Winter. Enjoy a beer flight for $7. Ages 21 and older.
