      La Jetée
      28 minutes; 1962
Chris Marker's “La Jetée” is a landmark of science-fiction filmmaking, a 28-minute masterpiece told almost entirely in still frames. Set in a post-apocalyptic near-future, it tells the story of an unnamed man whose vivid childhood recollections make him the perfect guinea pig for an experiment in time travel. After a lengthy and nightmarish period of conditioning, he is sent into the past, where he falls in love with a woman whom he once saw on a pier. “La Jetée” was the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's film “12 Monkeys.”

      5 minutes;1988
“STINK,” by Dean Snider, is a playful look at home movie footage and memory. Snider weaves a fictitious personal tale of a family’s beginnings and ends.

      “Nostalgia” (Hapax Legomena I)
      38 minutes; 1973
Hollis Frampton’s Nostalgia is a playful examination of sound and vision, past and future, memory and temporality, and perception and imagination. The film consists of static shots of photographs burning on a stove with a voice-over narration explaining the photographs. It has the appearance of simplicity but underneath is a test of the viewer’s memory of vision and sound. Celluloid Wednesdays is a midweek film series that offers audiences the chance to view celluloid film prints, historic narratives, documentaries, ethnographic and experimental films on the big screen. Presented in partnership with the Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA). Free; use the museum’s 7th Avenue entrance.
